M50 Editor · v0.1.0 beta  ·  M50 Setlist

Two new tools for the Korg M50.

A Program editor for the Mac with every parameter on one screen, and a set list app for your tablet: the one thing the M50 never had. Tap a tile and the M50 changes to that Program or Combination.

Free · No account · Connects over the M50's USB port

This is a beta. Both tools follow Korg's own M50 MIDI Implementation, and the editor is tested against all 640 factory Programs: every one reads and writes back byte for byte, and every value is shown with the meaning Korg documents. Neither tool has been tested with an M50 connected yet. Before you write anything to the M50, get the bank and save a backup. Send to M50 only changes what the M50 has open and stores nothing.
M50 Editor · Mac

Every Program parameter, on one screen

Both oscillators

Multisamples and velocity zones, pitch, two filters, drive, amp, both LFOs, key tracking and AMS mixers, with the pitch, filter and amp envelopes drawn as you change them.

Common, arpeggiator, drum track

Voice mode, unison, scales, tone adjust, controllers, the arpeggiator and drum track settings. Over 900 parameters, each with Korg's value names.

Effects routing

Choose the five insert effects, both master effects and the total effect by name from all 170 types, and set their chain, pan, bus and sends.

Live to the M50

With Live on, every change is sent to the M50's edit buffer as you make it, so you hear it straight away. Write to a memory location when you're happy.

Find anything

Search all five banks by name, or type part of a parameter's name to see it on every page at once.

Backup in .syx

Get one Program or a whole bank of 128 and save it as standard .syx. Opens .syx files and the .M50all files Korg's old editor saved.

M50 Setlist · tablet

The set list the M50 never had

Put your Programs and Combinations in the order you play them, with a name, a colour and a note on each tile. On stage, tap a tile or press Next, and the M50 switches mode, bank and sound for you.

M50 Setlist on a tablet: a set called Saturday Gig with eleven coloured tiles, Big Pad highlighted, and large Prev and Next buttons

Installs like an app

Open it in Chrome on your Android tablet and choose Add to Home screen. It gets its own icon, runs full screen and works without internet.

Real sound names

Read the names of all 640 Programs and 512 Combinations from your M50 once, and the picker shows them. They're stored on the tablet.

Hands-free

A Bluetooth page-turner pedal steps through the set: its arrow keys work as Prev and Next.

Several sets

Keep a list per gig. Export them to a file to back up or move to another tablet, and import them again.

Setting up

First launch

The editor on a Mac

  1. Unzip the download and drag M50 Editor to your Applications folder.
  2. Open it once. macOS will say it can't verify the developer (the app is signed, but not notarized by Apple). Click Done.
  3. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll down, and click Open Anyway next to M50 Editor.
  4. Connect the M50 by USB and set the channel to the M50's global MIDI channel. If it isn't found, pick its ports under In and Out.
  5. Click Get bank A to read the first 128 Programs, or Get edit buffer for the one the M50 has open.
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine "/Applications/M50 Editor.app"

The set list on a Samsung or other Android tablet

  1. On the M50, open Global → MIDI and turn on Enable Program and Bank Change. Note the global MIDI channel.
  2. Connect the M50's USB port to the tablet: a USB-C to USB-B cable, or the M50's usual cable through a USB-C OTG adapter.
  3. Open toolkit.bortevekkstudio.no/m50/setlist/ in Chrome, tap the connection button, and allow MIDI when Chrome asks.
  4. Set the same global channel, then Read sound names from the M50 (about a minute, once).
  5. In Chrome's menu, choose Add to Home screen (or Install app) to keep it as an app.
Questions

FAQ

Can it edit Combinations, Drum Kits and the effect parameters?

Not yet. This version edits every Program parameter and the effect types and routing. The settings inside each effect, Combinations and Drum Kits come next; Korg documents all of them, so they're a matter of time rather than guesswork.

Some values say "undocumented". What does that mean?

A few factory Programs store values outside the range Korg's documentation gives, for example in tone adjust assignments and some LFO waveforms. The editor shows them as they are and never changes them unless you move that control.

Does the set list work on an iPad?

Safari on iPad doesn't support Web MIDI. It works in a Web MIDI browser app from the App Store, or on any Android tablet or computer with Chrome or Edge.

Where are my set lists kept?

On the tablet, in the browser's storage for this site. Nothing is uploaded. Use Export in the connection panel to keep a copy as a file.

Tapping a tile does nothing on the M50.

Check that Enable Program and Bank Change is on in Global → MIDI, that the channel matches the M50's global channel, and that the connection button shows the M50. If the M50 stays in the wrong mode, make sure Chrome was allowed SysEx (full MIDI) access.
