Trigger Finger Editor · v0.1.1

Get the most out of your Trigger Finger.

Every pad, knob and fader on the M-Audio Trigger Finger can be set to exactly what you need, but only from its small display, one value at a time. This editor puts all 16 presets on one screen. Change anything, then write it back and check that it landed.

Free · No account · Works with the original 2004 Trigger Finger, firmware 1.04

The Trigger Finger Editor app: presets on the left, the unit's knobs, faders and pads in the middle, and the selected pad's settings on the right
Features

Everything the unit can do, on one screen

All 16 pads

Note, channel, note-toggle and fixed velocities. Also each pad's pressure CC and its program change and bank.

8 knobs and 4 faders

Any CC, a fixed channel or the global one, min and max. Also pitch bend, master volume, RPN and NRPN targets.

Verified writes

The unit confirms each message as it arrives. Afterwards the editor reads all presets back and compares them with what it sent.

Backup and restore

Save the whole unit as a standard .syx file and send it back whenever you like.

Per-preset settings

Global channel, transpose, velocity curve, pressure curve and velocity mode.

Quick edits

Make all 16 pads chromatic from any note, set every pad's channel, or copy a preset to another slot.

Live pads

Hit a pad and it lights up on screen, so you can see which one you're editing.

Your note names

Name notes C3 = 60 to match the unit's display, or C4 = 60 like most DAWs.

Two ways to use it

Both do the same thing, and you can save a .syx in one and load it in the other.

Recommended

Mac app

A native app for Apple Silicon Macs. It starts in a moment and talks to the unit directly over CoreMIDI. Works offline.

  • macOS 11 Big Sur or later
  • Apple Silicon (M1 or newer)
  • 2.8 MB download
No install

Web editor

The same editor in your browser, using Web MIDI. Good for a Windows PC or Intel Mac, or to try it out first. It has demo presets, so it works without a unit too.

  • Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge
  • The browser asks you to allow MIDI access, including SysEx
  • Not supported in Safari
Installing the Mac app

First launch

Why macOS asks first: the app is signed but not notarized by Apple yet, so the first time you open it macOS can't verify the developer. That's expected, and you only need to allow it once.
  1. Unzip the download and drag Trigger Finger Editor to your Applications folder.
  2. Open it once. macOS will say it can't verify the developer. Click Done.
  3. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll down, and click Open Anyway next to Trigger Finger Editor. Confirm with your password or Touch ID.
  4. Plug in the Trigger Finger and click Read from unit. All 16 presets load in a second or two.

Questions

FAQ

Which Trigger Finger models does it support?

The original M-Audio Trigger Finger (16 pads, 8 knobs, 4 faders). It's tested on firmware 1.04. It is not for the later Trigger Finger Pro, which is a different device.

Can it break my unit?

It only sends the same preset messages the unit's own editor software sent, and it checks each one. Before you change anything, click Save .syx. That file is a complete backup, and loading it and choosing Write all puts the unit back exactly as it was.

Do I need M-Audio's old Enigma software?

No. Enigma was M-Audio's editor for this unit, but it stopped working on modern Macs long ago. This editor replaces it, and doesn't need any driver: the Trigger Finger is class compliant.

My changes don't seem to take effect.

The unit loads a preset when you select it. After writing, select the preset again on the unit (or step to another and back).

The editor says the Trigger Finger was not found.

Check that it's connected by USB and powered, then click Connect. If another program has the unit open exclusively, quit that program first.

Is there a Windows or Intel Mac version?

Use the web editor in Chrome or Edge. It works on Windows, Intel Macs and Linux.
